What if I don’t believe in God?
That is not a problem. What would be a problem is if you were unwilling to believe in anything outside of yourself. Do you at least believe in the power of “Love?” Or in forces of “Good” that you can actually see, like the way people come together to help others after a disaster? Or in some Creative Intelligence that is behind the intricate laws and mathematical formulas that govern our world, whether you are looking through a telescope or a microscope? In this way, even Atheists need not be concerned with the spiritual part of 12-Step programs. All that is required is the belief in a power, any power, outside of yourself that, when tapped-into, will provide you with the power you need to conquer your addiction.
I realize this is a food addict’s support system but my experiences apply equally as much to it as to AA.
I quit drinking on my own without the need for an imaginary “higher power” or some presumptuous twelve step program or any other cookie cutter solution. Everyone is different with a different of problems. People drink for different reasons and the circumstances and consequences are also variable. There is no “one solution fits all” which likely explains A.A.s poor statistical recovery. I always disagreed with the way AA pigeon holes people into one category requiring a singular solution—when human psychology indicates precisely the opposite of this. I even learned to drink in moderation against the commonly held misconception that an alcoholic can never drink. My own force of will in recognition of consequences gave me back my control. No fairy tale gods and no outside forces were needed, Just the power of my own mind which all of us have if we bother to tap into it.
By virtue of the fact that you were able to moderate your drinking on your own proves that you are not a true alcoholic, doesn’t it? I understand and respect your opinion, but I feel strongly that the people I am trying to reach here are the ones (like myself) who are UNABLE to help themselves, for whatever reason. You are so lucky to have been able to stop on your own. I spent literally DECADES trying to do the same, with no success. For me, this was my only way out of hell.
People are not all the same. We all respond to different approaches. Some people lose control but regain control by themselves after seeing potential consequences like death. No god or higher power is required for some people. If it helps you then by all mean use it but I just don’t believe in god. Being an alcoholic doesn’t change that fact.
